A protest march by the ruling CPI(M)’s student wing SFI against the office of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi turned violent on Friday as a group of protesters allegedly entered and ransacked the office of a Lok Sabha member.

Police said around 100 Students Federation of India (SFI) activists were involved in the protest march and they barged into the office.

“There were around 80-100 workers. At present, eight of them are in custody. More police have been deployed,” police told PTI.

The student body protested, alleging that Gandhi failed to intervene in the issue of creating buffer zones around forests in the hilly areas of Kerala.

Television channels broadcast visuals of a group of protesters creating ruckus inside the MP office.

Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan reacted sharply to the incident, saying the attack showed chaos and “hooliganism”.

“Horrible attack by SFI goons on Rahul Gandhi’s MP office in Wayanad. This is unrighteousness and hooliganism. CPI(M) has become an organized mafia. Strongly condemning the attack,” the Congress leader tweeted.
