Radukanu named BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Radukanu She stunned the sporting world in September when she defeated Leyla Fernandez of Canada in the final at Flushing Meadows to become the first qualifier to win a Major.

The 19-year-old was also the first British woman to claim a major title since Virginia Wade’s victory at Wimbledon in 1977.

Radukanu won the prize by beating competition from diver Tom Daly, who finished second, and swimmer Adam Peaty, who finished third, as well as boxer Tyson Fury, soccer player Raheem Sterling and para-cyclist Sarah Storey.

“It is an honor to be among these nominees. It is amazing to win,” Radukanu said.

“The energy to play in front of my home audience at Wimbledon this year – that was something I’ve never felt before.”

Britain’s Andy Murray was the last tennis player to win the award in 2016, after winning the trophy in 2015 and 2013.
