When police investigate break-ins, they have some tips for students or anyone who plans to leave their home for a while.

“First and foremost, lock your doors and windows, and make sure those locks work,” Colangeli said. “Don’t leave items in plain view where that means putting your belongings away.” Or close your blinds.”

Many students, including Eden Heniger, are doing everything they can to make sure they are not targeted. “In my house, I have a smart lock on my door that locks my door every five minutes”

The number of reported incidents is down this year compared to previous years, says Coangeli, though the numbers to date may not tell the whole story.

“It could be that not all of our students are back yet and it could simply be that people are not reporting it.”

Police are encouraging citizens to report all suspected break-ins, regardless of what was stolen. He says this information will help them better assess the seriousness of the crime and possibly help link the break-ins.
