Punjab has not yet supported the bandh call, farmer leaders urge public to support

Though the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) has appealed to all the states to support the Bharat Bandh call to be held on September 27, Punjab has not made any announcement in this regard so far.

The bandh has been called from 6 am to 4 pm. The dharna on the borders of Delhi will also be for 10 months on 26 September. Farmers have called for shutdown of government and private institutions on Monday, but the state government has not yet taken any decision on it.

Dr Darshan Pal, President, Krantikari Kisan Union said, “On the completion of ten months of this historic struggle, the United Kisan Morcha has given a call to observe a Bharat Bandh on Monday against the government of anti-farmer unions. On that day from 6 am to 4 pm, all government and private offices, all educational and other institutions, all shops, industries and commercial establishments, all public events and programs will remain closed throughout the country. Public and private transport will also remain suspended during this period. All emergency establishments including hospitals, medical stores, relief and rescue operations and those visiting essential services and personal emergencies will be exempted. The bandh will be implemented in a voluntary and peaceful manner. The call has already received strong support from all sections of the society.”

Though the SKM said that everything would be closed voluntarily on September 27, the Himachal Pradesh government on Friday announced the reopening of schools for classes IX to XII from Monday.

Jagmohan Singh said, “The agitation is gaining momentum in Himachal Pradesh too, so the government deliberately reopened the schools on Monday. They could also open on Tuesdays. We hope that despite this step, we will get support from Himachal Pradesh. SKM members said that they appeal to all organizations of workers, traders, transporters, traders, students, youth and women to show solidarity towards the farmers on that day.

All India Bank Employees Union has extended its support to SKM. A SKM leader said: This bandh will be historic as meetings are already being held in states like UP, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh etc. to mobilize people…”
