Punjab follows Sindh’s lead, limits market hours to 9 pm as part of energy conservation drive

The Punjab government on Saturday said it is limiting the operating hours of markets, shopping malls, marriage halls and restaurants as part of an energy conservation drive.

Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz took this decision after consulting the business community of the province.

In a letter issued by the Directorate of Public Relations after the meeting, it has been said that from here the market, market and business centers will be closed till 9 pm. Restaurant till 11:30 pm and marriage hall till 10 pm.

The restrictions will not apply to medical stores, while there will be an exemption for the business community on Saturday.

CM Hamza Shahbaz said that the timing policy for the purchase of Eid-ul-Adha will be reviewed with the business community.

The handout said representatives of the business community at the meeting fully supported and appreciated the government’s measures to tackle the energy crisis.

A notification issued by Sindh Home Secretary Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo said that due to the prevailing power outages and load shedding, measures were required to bridge the gap between demand and supply of electricity.

It noted that the Federal Cabinet had on 7 June decided to take effective measures to reduce loadshedding by conserving energy and to prevent and mitigate the effects of anticipated energy shortages in the country through a national strategy.
