A Pune Rural Police investigation has revealed that a few days before the murder, Jadhav had posted a threat in Marathi to Bankhele on social media saying ‘I will kill you before the sun rises’. Bankhele’s status message on a social media platform in Marathi was, “Santosh Jadhav, when we meet, I will shoot you.”

Police believe that the exchange of threats between the two on social media was the immediate reason behind the attack on Bankhele.

Police investigation later revealed that around 2.30 pm that day, three men chased and shot at Bankhele. A joint investigation was launched by the local crime branch of Pune Rural Police and Manchar police station, which has jurisdiction over the area.
