At the place where the elephant suffered a heart attack and died, a veterinary doctor from the Union Territory Government was also present taking care of the elephant. They said the animal was healthy before the unexpected cardiac arrest that eventually led to its death. The elephant died after falling on the road near Public Secondary School Kalve College.

As soon as the news of Lakshmi’s death spread, a large number of people started gathering near Kalve College. The body was carried by a huge machinery and placed in front of the temple for public homage. Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, Public Works Minister K Lakshminarayanan, former chief minister V Narayanasamy were among those who paid tributes to the elephant. Hundreds of people queued up to pay homage to the elephant. He paid tearful tribute to Pachidaram.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had repeatedly appealed to the Puducherry government to relocate Lakshmi to the sanctuary. The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), which assessed the elephant’s mental and physical health in early 2015, submitted a report raising serious concerns about the elephant’s health and safety.
