Mr Raab faces calls to resign after allegedly defying Downing Street orders To cut his holiday on the Mediterranean island two days before returning to London, while Kabul fell into the hands of Islamists.

Instead, Mr Raab was accused of tanning his tan at the Amirandes Hotel in Crete, a five-star resort with its own private beach, fine dining and ‘one of the largest pools ever’ . .

But the boutique hotel has now been hit by fake TripAdvisor reviews – since being removed – ridiculing the foreign secretary.

One troll, who gave his name as Dom R, gave the hotel a five-star rating, saying: ‘I didn’t fully understand the full extent of getting away from all this until now.

‘Quite honestly, there may be a war going on outside, and you’ll hardly notice it. Bliss! P.S. Terrible mobile signal on the beach but fine for me.’

But when Dominic Raab admitted to being caught ‘off-guard’ by the Taliban’s ruckus, the luxury Crete hotel where he stayed last week may want to reconsider his last word of pride.

Mr Raab was seen at the five-star Amirandes Hotel just before he was flown back to Britain to help deal with what has been described as the biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez.

Located on his own private beach, Amirandes says it has ‘a first-class dining scene and one of the largest pools you’ll ever see’ – and is said to be ‘inspired by the palaces of Minoan kings’.

Hilariously, the hotel’s general manager, Vasilis Minadakis, appears to have been duped by the bogus review.

He replied: ‘Dear Dom, thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review about your recent stay at TripAdvisor. We are very glad to read that you enjoyed your time with us so that you can relax and escape from everyday life.

‘We hope to welcome you back to our resort soon and wish you a good rest of the summer.’

Another troll, Lan quipped, gave the hotel just three stars: ‘Too busy working to relax’.

He continued: ‘As a very important minister to a very important island nation off the coast of Northern Europe, I must clearly conceal my identity by writing under a pseudonym.

‘In addition to being able to relax and enjoy the amenities of this excellent hotel, I was stuck in my room on the phone 24/7 to coordinate the evacuation efforts needed for a major unfolding international crisis.

‘Some ungodly people are saying that I was resting on the beach because the situation was deteriorating rapidly.

‘Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact that I suddenly remembered that I had left my water fins on the beach after my regular 6 a.m. swim before starting work and just got down to retrieve them.

‘My friend Boris will support me on this.’

In another three-star review, titled ‘For a Friend’, Nichols said: ‘My friend Dom came here recently.

‘He is the busy foreign secretary of an independent island nation with a great history and, according to him, a great future.

‘He was planning to relax and take things easy, but was completely overwhelmed by the NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan, which he was completely taken by surprise despite being the foreign secretary of a NATO member.

Still, Dom’s stay was excellent. He was rarely distracted or upset and had time to completely download from work.

‘He rested so much that he ignored the blatant failure of Britain’s foreign policy that had happened during his stay – 100 per cent comfort, 100 per cent foreign policy failure.’

Mr Raab faced a stream of criticism for staying on leave as the Afghan capital was seized by the Taliban, and for failing to call on the Afghan foreign minister to seek help from interpreters stranded in the country.

The claim has been vehemently denied by his friends, who insist that he was assured by Prime Minister Boris Johnson that he could stay with his family until the end of the weekend.

The saga has drawn a dig at cabinet ministers from within his own party and calls for Labor to resign, although Mr Johnson has said he has ‘absolutely’ confidence in his foreign secretary.

However, this has undoubtedly strained relations between Downing Street and the Foreign Office.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: ‘There is no doubt that Raab was asked to come back that Friday.

There was a significant surprise when he appeared on Cobra down from Crete on Sunday. He must have given Boris to the noble and sought permission to end his leave’.

Mr Raab told the MoS that he had enjoyed a ‘wave of support’, and denied that there was pressure to resign from within his party.

He said: ‘I haven’t heard any of my Conservative colleagues asking me to resign, but I have a wave of support.

‘There is no doubt that, as in all countries, the pace of the Taliban takeover is surprising.

‘But as a foreign secretary traveling around the world, whether I’m on vacation or I’m traveling for work purposes, I’m always ready to be able to catch things’.

A close aide of Raab insisted that Number 10 had not ‘ordered’ him to return on Friday. The aide added: ‘The suggestion was that he should plan to come back.

’ He added that he needs to be ready to come back at a moment’s notice if the situation worsens. After this he talked to the PM about this and it was decided that he would come back on Sunday.

The aide strongly denied reports that Mr Raab had spent much of last Sunday at the beach: ‘That is not true. He put his family in a gazebo on the beach so he could go back and work at the hotel, all the while checking in on them every now and then.
