Waterloo Regional Police reported two major fireworks-related incidents in Kitchener and Waterloo over the Canada Day long weekend.

The first took place on a Saturday at 12:30 pm near King and Spring Street in Waterloo.

Police say a patrol officer spotted a man setting off fireworks in a street in the busy Uptown district.

They say a 20-year-old from Waterloo was then arrested and charged with mischief, endangering life, criminal negligence and breach of duty related to explosives, under $5,000.

The second call came around noon on Saturday when emergency services were called to deal with multiple fires in Kitchener’s McLennan Park.

Police say residents told them a man was setting off fireworks in the park, causing dry grass to catch fire.

He says that members of the Kitchener Fire Department got the fire under control very quickly.

Police say the park was searched but the suspect fled on a bicycle before officers arrived.
