ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday met Ambassador Zhang Ming, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), along with officials of the SCO Secretariat in Beijing, China, to invite the PM to join the bloc. are on a trip. The Prime Minister shared on Twitter that during the meeting he reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to the principles of the SCO and the Shanghai spirit. He appreciated the role of the organization in strengthening international solidarity and cooperation in the face of global challenges, especially rising food and fuel prices.

Following Pakistan’s commitment to work with SCO member countries, the PM shared that the government is ready to work to promote cooperation in the fields of trade and economy, connectivity and communication, energy and agriculture, climate change and information technology. Ambassador Ming is on a four-day visit to Pakistan with the SCO delegation. During his stay in the federal capital, he held meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Commerce, Information Technology, Climate Change and Maritime Affairs. The SCO Secretary General also spoke at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and engaged with business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The SCO is an inter-regional multilateral entity made up of eight member states, including China and Russia. The member countries of the organization make up 41% of the global population and comprise 23% of the global GDP.
