PM calls for formation of high powered Police Technical Mission for policing at the grassroots level

Prime minister Narendra Modi On Sunday called for setting up of a High Powered Police Technology Mission under the leadership of the Union Home Minister to adopt futuristic technologies for the needs of policing at the grassroots level.

Addressing the concluding session of the 56th Conference of DGPs and IGPs here, the Prime Minister also sought to analyze all incidents related to police and develop case studies so that it can be made an institutionalized learning mechanism.

He called for the formation of a High Powered Police Technology Mission under the leadership of the Home Minister to adopt futuristic technologies for the needs of policing at the grassroots, an official statement said.

Citing the importance of technology in the lives of the general public, Modi cited the example of CoWIN, an online platform for COVID-19 Immunization, GeM, Government e-Market Place and UPI, Instant Real-time Payment System.

He appreciated the hybrid format of the conference as it allowed free flow of information between different ranks.

The Prime Minister suggested the development of interoperable technologies that would benefit police forces across the country.

The statement said that he appreciated the positive change in the attitude of the police towards the public, especially post-Covid.

Modi also suggested positive use of drone technology for the benefit of the people and called for a review of the smart policing concept launched in 2014.

He suggested development of a roadmap for its continuous transformation and institutionalization of smart policing concept in police forces.

To tackle some of the routine challenges faced by the police, he emphasized on engaging highly qualified youth to explore technical solutions through hackathons.

Modi also awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to Intelligence Bureau (IB) personnel.

For the first time, as directed by the Prime Minister, IPS officers from different states presented articles on contemporary security issues, adding more value to the conference.

The meeting was attended by 62 DGPs and IGPs of States and Union Territories and Director Generals (DGs) of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Central Police Organizations (CPOs).

More than 400 officers of various ranks attended the conference virtually from IB offices across the country.

The Prime Minister participated in the discussion and gave valuable suggestions.

For the conference, various core groups of DGPs were formed to discuss key aspects of national security like prison reforms, terrorism, left-wing extremism, cyber crime, drug trafficking, foreign funding of NGOs, drones- Was. Related matters, development of border villages etc.

The conference was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday. Shah also gave away trophies to three of the best police stations in the country.

The Home Minister participated in all the discussions during the conference and gave his valuable suggestions and guidance, the statement said.
