Plaza Art Fair returns for 90th year

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) — Following COVID-19 put the kibosh at the Plaza Art Fair, as we know it, the festival is celebrating 90 years.

“It’s just a tradition that’s beautiful enough,” said Ariel Thomas Newman.

“We have about 1,300 artists applied,” said Casey Baena, general manager of Country Club Plaza. “We have over 200 artists who are here.”

Been coming for many decades.

“When I lived in Puerto Rico, I would come back in September to make sure I did that,” said Greg Jones of Roland Park.

This is the 90th year as usual.

“Hilarious. It’s awe-inspiring. It’s a lot of fun,” said artist Michael Kemper.

Except that was not the case last year.

“Last year has been disappointing for a number of reasons,” Bena said.

So there is a degree of gratitude for this good time.

“Very much appreciated, especially after the year that we have,” Keith Ross said.

Erica Lusko said, “It’s nice to be out with people again and to do things that we normally used to or do.”

“I love everyone here,” said 6-year-old Brooks Smith.

But for their parents and sisters, the special part is less about the energy of everyone else around them than the people who came with them.

“Because our dad is leaving, and we want to spend more time with him before he leaves,” explained his 8-year-old sister, Ella.

“My husband is leaving for deployment on Tuesday,” continued his mother, Katrina Smith.

Her youngest, Reagan Perkowski, filled us with the space where she works.

“the air Force!” He said in the screams of a 3-year-old child.

Her father intended to add it to her collection on Friday. This is a collection that costs nothing and means everything.

Greg Smith said, “Those hugs and those kisses and stuff you can get before you’re gone for a while.”

He said that he would be posted as a firefighter in Dubai for the next six months.

The art fair runs from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturdays and from 11 am to 5 pm on Sundays
