Plainsville residents raise money to build kitchen for young baker battling cancer

Plainfield, Mass. (WHDH) — The Plainsville resident is helping her own deal with a resurgence of cancer by making sure she can still find joy through her favorite hobby — baking.

Malia Jusic, 13, battled metastatic neuroblastoma for the first time nine years ago and was declared cancer-free — but was re-diagnosed at the beginning of the year.

“It was a really big hit when she fell, it looked like the rug was pulled from under her after trying so hard to get to where she was,” said Malia’s mother, Meg Jusick.

Malia said she misses her friends and playing football, and has turned to baking as a way to cope with her diagnosis and treatment. And she’s turning out the award-winning dessert that came first in an online baking contest against adults.

“Baking always takes my mind off things… It’s helpful to take my mind off this treat,” Malia said.

And residents of Plainsville organized a fundraising for her at King Philip Middle School on Saturday, with half of the proceeds going to Malia to build her kitchen.

“She’s going to have her own kitchen in her house so she has a place where she can go and get away from the worries of her parents and the world in general and just go to her happy place and She can bake whatever she wants,” said Glenn Jusick, Malia’s father. “It means the world to us right now.”
