PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A neighborhood is in turmoil after a 76-year-old man was shot dead while finishing his daily morning walk. Police identified the man as Loi Nguyen of Philadelphia.

The shooting took place on Tuesday morning in the 4200 block of L Street in the Juniata neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Neighbors say the crime was particularly brutal, given the age of the victim and how it happened.

You can make the most of your morning by taking a walk to the 76-year-old Loi. Same time, same place.

“He never left the block, so he would literally go through the alley, down Bristol, to the L, to the L, back to the hunting park and he would just circle,” said Gianna Cianci.

Police say a man seen in surveillance video at around 5 a.m. Tuesday disrupted the 76-year-old’s morning ritual.

“It appears that the perpetrator was walking north on the way back from Hunting Park Avenue, went after this 76-year-old male and shot him once in the back of the head. He immediately collapsed and was killed at the scene. But he was pronounced dead,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Smalls.

More than 12 hours after his murder, the police are still searching for this suspect and motive.

Neighbors say that Loi was a loving grandfather and family man who did no harm to anyone.

“The smile on his face takes everything. You never see him in any situation, in any kind of controversy. He’s too old for this. He doesn’t speak any English. You killed a man who doesn’t speak English at all. You get nothing out of this,” said neighbor Tony Broza.

Nasser Shaki said, “If you kill like this, then against an old man who is walking in his neighborhood like you need help in your head and you need help in your heart.”

Candles and flowers now mark where Loi lost her life.

“It’s hard when bad things happen to good people,” Cianci said. “I know my neighbors are definitely feeling uncomfortable. It definitely makes you question anyone and everyone. ,

We are told that a community meeting was held in the area on Tuesday where residents discussed the incident and other security concerns.

Anyone having knowledge of this is asked to contact the police.
