Peterborough Humane Society will begin operations in its new home early next week, ending its long stay at the old location on the city’s east end.

According to the Humane Society, operations are shifting peterborough animal care center Technology Dr. on Tuesday, January 17, 1999. Starting Saturday, the current 65 year old facility at 385 Lansdowne St. East will be closing.

During the move, the current shelter and new center will be closed so all staff can focus on making the move as smooth as possible. Although the shelter will remain closed, the public can call the emergency line at 705-745-7676 ext. 656 for emergencies. can be found at pet adoption Humane Society website,

Construction is not complete on the new $10.3M facility built on 20 acres of land. The 24,000-square-foot facility houses a provincial dog rehabilitation center, adoption and education centers, spay and neuter clinics, and offices.

The humane society notes that “minor projects” are still in progress on the interior as well as exterior projects such as landscaping that will continue into the spring.

Peterborough Humane Society’s new animal care center nears completion


“This is an exciting time at PHS, but as it will take some time for us to settle, we appreciate the patience and support of the community,” said Executive Director Sean Morey.

“We are delighted and very proud to welcome everyone to our soon-to-be new home to experience this community space designed to revolutionize animal welfare.”

Morey noted that the move from Lansdowne Street to Technology Drive would be supported by volunteers and local businesses. Items will be moved by McWilliams Moving & Storage and animals will be moved to cargo vans from Auto Connect. P

A soft opening is scheduled for the new center in mid-February. A grand opening is being planned for spring, which will also include a community event to celebrate this new state-of-the-art building.

The humane society is also preparing for “Betty White Day” on January 17, in honor of the late celebrity, who was known for her love of pets. Last year, over $20,000 was raised for the new animal care center.

“We hope the community will honor Betty again this year and celebrate our big step with us by contributing to our capital campaign,” Morey said. “The transfer is happening soon, but we still need the community’s help to reach our fundraising goal.”
