Parkes Canada backcountry skier responds to distress call from Calgary Globalnews.ca

Parks Canada responded to a distress call from some people who were backcountry skiing nearby Sunshine Village in Banff.

According to a Sunshine Village spokesperson, guest services received the call earlier Wednesday. The spokesperson said Parks Canada is responding to the reports and is providing help due to the proximity of the incident to the resort.

This comes after Parks Canada and Avalanche Canada issued Special Public Avalanche Warning For recreational backcountry users in BC’s interior. This warning will come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until Monday, January 2.

The warning also includes areas near Banff National Park.

There are currently no details on the kind of people in distress and how many people were involved.

A spokesperson told Global News that the Alberta RCMP has “no knowledge” of any missing skiers within or outside the boundaries of Sunshine Village.

Global News has contacted Parks Canada with a request for comment.
