New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind presented on Monday Padma Awards to recipients for bringing change or contributing in their respective fields and disciplines to bring about a change for the masses in the year 2020.
Late Union Ministers George Fernandes, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj were among those who handed over Padma medals and ‘Sanad’ at the civil decoration ceremony held almost a year and a half after they were postponed due to the COVID outbreak; Also actress Kangana Ranaut, filmmakers Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor, boxing champion MC Mary Kom and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu.
The 2020 awardees include former President and Prime Minister of Mauritius Aniruddha Jagannath (posthumously), Sri Vishveshtheertha Swamiji Sri Pejavar Adhokhaja Math Udupi (posthumously), classical singer Chhannulal Mishra (all awarded Padma Vibhushan); Padma Bhushan winner Manohar Parrikar (posthumously), industrialist Anand Mahindra and Venu Srinivasan, former Nagaland Chief Minister SC Jamir and Jammu and Kashmir politician Muzaffar Hussain Baig; and retired DG Medical Services, Air Force, Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay, who was awarded the Padma estate President Kovind amidst thunderous applause.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several cabinet ministers participated in the civil decoration ceremony held in two separate sessions on Monday.

Acknowledging Fernandes’ selfless service to the nation, Shah tweeted: “From emergency to holding various positions in the government, he contributed immensely to the progress of the nation.” On Jaitley, he tweeted: “His knowledge and experience in areas like law, finance etc made an unforgettable contribution to India’s development… His dedication towards national progress will always inspire us.”
