Over 50 dogs, cats, birds rescued from filthy conditions in Summit Company’s home, says Humane Society

Twinsburg, Ohio — More than 50 animals, including dogs, cats and birds, were rescued from filthy conditions by the Humane Society of Summit County following reports of alleged abuse and neglect, according to a news release from the organization.

The situation was reported to HSSC’s humanitarian agents, who examined and confiscated the animals in October due to severe neglect, the release said.

HSSC representatives said that while initial reports suggested there were only a dozen animals inside the property, when agents arrived, they found more than 50 dogs, cats and birds in filthy conditions with little access to food and water .

A total of 22 small Chihuahua-mix dogs, including two litter puppies, were found and rescued from the home. The release said a total of 13 adult cats and kittens were found in each room “sheltering from extremely unsafe conditions—including one kitten hiding in an oven drawer and another in a cabinet under the sink.”

The HSSC said fifteen birds were found in the cages, which were surrounded by garbage, garbage and insects.

According to the release, it took the agents 12 hours over two days to locate, trap and transport the animals.

Once the animals arrived at the HSSC, veterinary staff began to treat and treat the animals for malnutrition and other emergency medica ailments, including fleas, open wounds and scars from chronic injuries that were not treated. Most of the animals had ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection that required a week-long treatment, which the HSSC said has strained the organization’s resources.

The animals also suffered emotional wounds due to their neglect, and the behavioral staff of HSSC are working with the animals to develop trust.

“What these animals have gone through in their lives is sad,” said HSSC’s president and CEO. “While the influx of animals with such great medical needs challenges us, that is why we are here – to give a second chance to vulnerable and hurt pets in our own community; animals that have nowhere else to go. We are proud to give these animals a future through adoption, after hope and rehabilitation.”

Ownership of the animals was granted to HSSC on 30 November with a legal ruling of the Akron Municipal Court.

The birds, which include a parrot, five cockatiels, seven pigeons and a pair of feathers, have been transferred to a local bird rescue for continued treatment and eventual adoption.

The HSSC said that because of their shyness, the dogs would only be needed by adult adoptive families or families with children over the age of 13. Some dogs will do best with a resident dog.

The group of rescued pets has been called “President Pets” because each animal was named after a US president or vice president, the HSSC said.

While some animals have already been adopted, interested adopters can complete HSSC’s adoption application form online to be contacted on a first-come, first-considered basis as President Pets Adoption become available. Find out more and fill out the adoption application here.

The cost of caring for this group of pets is estimated to exceed $50,000, and HSSC is accepting donations online here, or by mail to the Humane Society of Summit County, 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087.

Including the animals involved in this matter, HSSC currently has 370 animals, and the organization serves over 2,500 animals every year.
