Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday warned people against opinion polls ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and called them “opium polls”.

“Opinion polls are really opium polls. We need to be careful from them,” Yadav said in his Republic Day address at the party office here.

“BJP leaders want to take the election in a different direction with their statements. All kinds of misconceptions are being spread on WhatsApp.

The SP had earlier written to the Election Commission demanding a ban on opinion polls on news channels, calling them a violation of the model code of conduct.

Yadav said people with ‘negative mindset’ and ‘dividing society’ want to take the country back.

The country got freedom due to the long struggle and sacrifice of thousands of youth. Pledge should be taken to save this freedom, democracy and constitution.

Yadav alleged that the BJP government “insulted” farmers during the struggle for the Agriculture Bill and called upon people to come together against it.

“The sons of the farmers are guarding the border. But farmers are being harassed and force is being used in the country. We all know what was done to quell the protest of the farmers. Everyone should consider this assembly election as their own. It will be decisive.”

Yadav also claimed that after March 10, when the SP comes to power, the problems of the people will be resolved.
