“Whenever you step foot on the first tee or 18th green or wherever, it’s no secret how special this place is,” Young said. “And that’s definitely been a goal for an Open Championship. And it’s a little extra special for me to be here for the first time.”

He is also not sure that he did his best for his opening round. His tee shots weren’t always going where he was looking. But in his short time at St Andrews, he learned enough about where to go and how to play the centuries-old course to get right.

Young walked out at 31. He drove off the green on par-4 12th, pitched back 8 feet and reached 7-under par for the birdie. A record score was within reach at St Andrews on a good day for scoring.

But he did a three-put on the 14th to level. His 10-foot birdie chance in 15th out of the cup. He missed another good opportunity on the next hole from 15 feet.

Still, the 25-year-old New Yorker had some complaints. He loves Lynx golf.

“I don’t think I honestly thought much about it,” Young said. “You can play here every day for a year and you’ll just scratch the surface of what you can know about this place. Golf courses have so many humps and limitations and little nuances that we can’t wait for four or five days.” I can never know when I have to prepare.”

for that trip? He still has great memories, none at the top of St Andrews.

He said, “My dad asked permission to play the back tee. I think it’s something you have to do, if I remember correctly.” “So when we came out with the R&A building to hit our first tee shot, a bunch of R&A members were probably watching. And I’m glad I didn’t know. I bet I panicked Would have been on my mind.”

Now detecting Young’s pulse is difficult. He’s been feeling around this game for quite some time now that he doesn’t have much to go on. It’s a perfect start, and for now, that’s all.

He said, “I’m glad I scored 64. I’m glad I’m still leading the Open Championship, as far as I know, but that’s not going to change how I look an hour from now.” I feel.”
