Snowmobiling: It’s as Canadian as maple syrup, curling, and beaver.
Every year, thousands of Ontarians hit the trails for this unique experience.
While it can be a fun way to get outside in the winter months, snowmobiling can also be extremely dangerous.
“Speed is a very, very big factor,” OPP Const said. Art Vitkowski.

On Sunday, provincial police were called to a fatal snowmobiling incident in Beckwith Township in which two drivers were thrown from their snowmobiles, one of whom died.
At the Lennox and Eddington Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club in York, safety always comes before fun, and for Ed Emel, that starts with interactive trail guides.
“She’s the guide that tells you the availability of trails, green being open, yellow being limited and red being closed,” he said.
Amell said that before they hit the trails for a day in the snow, they make sure they’ve got all their ducks covered when it comes to keeping themselves safe.
“You have to have an approved helmet, it has to be fixed, good clothing that will protect you from the harsh environment we ride in,” Amell explained.
Witkowski said that like cars on the road, alcohol and drug impairment is a serious danger when riding a snowmobile.

“Alcohol and drugs. You must abstain from alcohol and drugs while on any type of motorized vehicle,”
While it can be dangerous, Amell says that as long as you follow the rules and stay aware, snowmobiling is a great experience.
“You’re outside, you’re seeing things that most people don’t get to see in the wintertime,” he said.
Amell said people are always encouraged to try it, but to do it in a safe way.
