One killed, 2 injured in shooting at Illinois WeatherTech facility

Two other workers were robbed and confronted by a temporary worker after a fatal shooting occurred Saturday at a WeatherTech facility in Illinois, police said.

Police in the village of Bolingbrook, a suburb of Chicago, received a call about a shooting at the compound at around 6.25 a.m. and three people were shot, police said.

Police Chief Mike Rompa said one victim was killed, another was in critical condition and a third was treated in hospital and released.

The suspect fled when police arrived but was arrested later that morning, police said. He was identified as Charles C. McKnight Jr., 27.

Police believe the shooting happened after McKnight, a temporary hire at the facility, robbed two coworkers at gunpoint during an overnight shift, and then was confronted about the robbery, Rompa said. .

“When confronted an argument ensued and the perpetrator pulled out a weapon and shot three co-workers,” he said. “This shooting does not appear to be pre-planned.”

Police said that a watch and purse have also been taken in the robbery. Police said they found a handcuff and stolen items when McKnight was arrested.

The man killed has been identified by police as 37-year-old Central Hightower of Plainfield. Police said the injured worker is in a critical condition and is a 25-year-old man, who was one of the robbed people.

Rompa said the robbery took place in a restroom, the victims told the staff about it and an argument ensued before the suspect allegedly opened fire.

Police said McKnight worked for a temporary agency and was assigned to WeatherTech from June 9.

Police said McKnight is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer speaking on his behalf on Saturday.

The building in which the police shot was called the distribution centre. WeatherTech, a maker of automotive products, did not immediately respond to a request for comment earlier on Saturday.
