“I thought we were in the dock now, but then a plume of smoke surrounded us,” says McKenna. “That’s when I went: ‘Crap, this isn’t great.'”

Canadian Coast Guard officials said at a news conference on Sunday that the pair and about 220 other souls were rescued without any problems or injuries.

Northumberland Ferries vice president Don Cormier said they were expecting an evacuation with their vehicles on Sunday evening or Monday. The company will make arrangements to send them to those who have since traveled outside the region.

The fire is believed to have started in the engine room, but the crew is yet to reach the source.

“We have not entered engine room space and do not expect to do so until a thorough assessment has been made on the stability of the ship,” says Cormier.

Ferry service on the route has been canceled for Monday, with the remaining ferries expected to return as scheduled on Tuesday.

Despite the circumstances, the evacuation was not a terrifying experience, says McKenna.

“It was a lot of people coming together. Staying calm and doing the right thing. Nobody panicked, nobody got hurt,” he says.
