November 6, 1981, forty years ago: a warning from Assam

The leaders of the Assam government warned of fresh agitation if it failed to disperse the foreigners who had entered the state during the period 1961-1971. At a press conference in Guwahati, he said he was no longer interested in informal talks. He said that if the government wants further talks, it should be at the ministerial level. But before that he has to clarify his stand on foreigners. Leaders of the movement, which included representatives of the Akhil Asom Gana Sangram Parishad and the All Assam Students’ Union, said any decision on future talks with the government would be taken by the executive committees of their organisations. The two organizations will jointly sponsor a peaceful rally on November 10 to inform people about their future course of action.

Congress(S) Dilemma

If the party leadership gives its consent to the Kerala unit to join the Congress (I) to form the government in the state, another split in the Congress (S) is now possible. Although most of the party working committee members seem against any affiliation with the Congress (I), the compulsions of Kerala politics may compel them to change their position.
