‘Not aware of whom he was referring to…will ask’: Ajit Pawar on PM Modi’s ‘bhatakti aatma’ jibe at Sharad Pawar

Facing flak for staying quiet when Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to his uncle Sharad Pawar as a “bhatakti aatma (wandering soul)”, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said on Wednesday that he was unaware of whom Modi was referring to in his speech. Ajit Pawar also said that he used to consider the veteran leader as “his God” in the past but they were on different paths now.

“I was present when the Prime Minister mentioned ‘bhatakti aatma’ in the speech. I am not aware of whom he was referring to…I will ask when we meet next during an election rally,” Ajit Pawar said.

A day after PM Modi’s attack, Sharad Pawar had hit back on Tuesday saying that his soul was “restless” thinking of ways to present the plight of farmers and the common man. Asked about this remark, Ajit Pawar said, “I used to consider the veteran leader as God. Now, we are on different paths. He is a senior leader and I don’t want to comment on a statement made by a leader of such a high stature.”

On his cousin and Baramati MP Supriya Sule’s statement that those calling her inefficient now did not realise the same in her 17-year political career as MP, he said, “It took us this long to realise her inefficiency.”

Ajit Pawar also refuted criticism against the Election Commission for holding elections in five phases in the state purportedly to benefit the BJP. “The Election Commission is an autonomous body and does not work under any influence,” he said.

Festive offer

Ajit Pawar said the Opposition is unnecessarily defaming PM Modi because it was upset over being out of power for 10 years and over the country’s growth under his leadership.

Modi attacked Sharad Pawar at an election rally held in Pune on Monday for candidates from the Baramati, Shirur, Maval and Pune Lok Sabha seats. While Baramati will vote on May 7, voting for the three other seats will take place on May 13. The April 29 rally was the first election rally in Pune after the Nationalist Congress Party split where Ajit Pawar shared a dais with PM Modi.
