American sprinter Noah Lyles leads America in 200m final World Athletics Championships On Thursday night, a national record was broken in the process.
Lyles, who won the bronze medal at home 2020 toyko olympics In the men’s 200 meters, he won home gold with a time of 19.31 – beating his personal best of 19.50 and the American record of 19.32, which was set by Michael Johnson at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
“I was very self-concerned about whether that number would change from ‘2’ to ‘1’,” Lyles said of the unofficial time that first came in at 19.32.

“Nobody wants to share the record. I guess Michael Johnson doesn’t want to share the record either. That’s why I was begging to change it.”
Kenny Bednarek and Arianne Knighton rounded out the top three spots, leading to America’s second sweep in the world: the first 100, and now the 200.

Liles shared a photo of herself and Johnson on the track after receiving their medal on Twitter on Friday.
“I’m preparing it!” He wrote in the tweet. “2nd Fastest American Ever!”

“America, like, winning medals left and right,” Lyles said. “It feels great because I’ve been waiting to come out and dominate America since I took the stage.”
Lyles’ time is the third fastest overall, after Usain Bolt’s 19.19 in 2009 and Johann Blake’s 19.26 two years later.
