No communal angle in attack on Kashmiri youth: Gurgaon Police

Three days after a Kashmiri youth was attacked by a group of men in Gurgaon, police say preliminary investigations have found no “communal angle” in the incident. Investigators suspect that the victim and the attacker work in the same office and that the incident may have been the result of a recent dispute between them.

Gurgaon Police PRO Subhash Boken said: “The FIR was registered immediately. Prima facie, we suspect that the accused belong to the same workplace. Further investigation is on and action will be taken.”

The victim Tariq Ahmed Bhat (24) works as a financial advisor for Policybazaar, a fintech company in Gurgaon. The incident took place near the office in Sector 44 at around 7.30 pm on Thursday. In his complaint to the police, he alleged: “I had just left the office when about four men grabbed me and started beating me… They tried to stab me. A sharp object … I shouted for help and they left threatening to kill me.

Tariq told Indian Express That he could not identify the accused as they were masked and it was dark.

A police officer said, “We came to know about the matter through Twitter. The police have registered an FIR under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention). Inspector Jasveer, SHO of Sushant Lok Police Station said that the investigation is still on.

A student activist, Nasir Khumi, who raised the issue on social media, tweeted on Sunday that “Haryana government has extended all possible help to Kashmiri youth”.

Tariq, a resident of Chinjamula in Kupwara district in Kashmir, said he had come to Gurgaon about three years ago to work as a customer service executive for an airline.

On the incident, Policybazaar said, “We stand in support of our employee Tariq Bhat and (we) are in constant touch with the local authorities to help him. The well being of our employees is of paramount importance to us and we will do everything possible to ensure the safety of everyone in the Policybazaar family.”
