New FIR registered against 4 policemen including DSP for disappearance of ‘evidence’

The Ludhiana city police have registered a case against four of its personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), for the alleged disappearance of a CD in a 2012 bribery case.

On September 21, 2012, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Harjit Singh was booked and later charged with allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 5,000 from Baldev Singh, an accused in a fraud case. was dismissed in The complainant had recorded a CD which contained the purported video of ASI taking bribe.

The ASI was later acquitted by a court as the CD containing the video recordings of the policemen who had taken bribe had gone missing from the case file. In 2017, an additional sessions judge ordered the police commissioner to conduct an additional inquiry into the misappropriation of evidence. The CP had identified Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP, city) J Elanchezhian for investigation.

Now on the basis of that investigation, a new FIR has been registered against the four policemen.

An FIR has been registered against the accused under sections 166-A (b) and 217 of the IPC following the court order at Mehraban police station. The accused have been identified as DSP Lakhbir Singh, Inspector Inderjit Singh and ASIs Tarsem Singh and Surinder Pal.
