A man is dead after a commercial break and a Calgary police officer fired his gun Tuesday morning.

Several police units filled a vacant building in the northeast community of Meridian around 4:20 a.m. Two ambulances, an EMS supervisor and the fire department were all present for a short time.

Police had gone to a vacant building in the Franklin Industrial Park for a report of breaking and entering. Police allege the suspect attacked an officer with a weapon, although it has not been confirmed what the weapon was. CPS said that’s when the police officer shot the man. Though CPR was given, the person was declared dead at the scene.

Some units were still on the scene as of 7:03 a.m., when detectives arrived. Since the building is 110,000 square feet, it was expected that police would be on the scene for a while.

At around 7:32 am the medics reached the spot. Police said the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) would be handling the investigation, with no further comment expected.

By 8:45 am the police presence was not stopping any traffic.
