“The crews are prepared to work in all kinds of extreme weather conditions and are following corporate safety standards in extreme cold and wearing personal protective equipment in winter. Safety is at the heart of everything we do.”

Environment Canada has placed the entire province under an extreme cold weather warning, forecasting a wind chill of -45 and maximum wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

According to the weather agency, the lowest temperature in the province was recorded at Mechanic Settlement in Kings County, which reached -32 degrees Celsius from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday, and a record-breaking -49 wind chill.

A record was also broken in neighboring Nova Scotia.

Around 4 p.m., Environment Canada recorded a wind chill of -43 at Halifax Stansfield International Airport, breaking the previous record of -41 from 1967.
