Yangon: A Myanmar court on Monday again postponed its decision in the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi for illegally importing and possessing walkie-talkies, a source with knowledge of the matter said.
The Nobel laureate has been detained ever since the generals staged a February 1 coup against his government, ending a brief period of democracy in the Southeast Asian country.
Nationwide protests against the insurgency have been met with a bloody crackdown that has killed more than 1,300 people and arrested more than 11,000, according to a local watchdog group.
Suu Kyi, 76, was due to hear a verdict on charges that she had imported illegally and had a walkie-talkie – the latest in a list of decisions in a junta court that could see her in prison for the rest of her life.
A source with knowledge of the matter said without giving details, but the judge adjourned the verdict till January 10.
Earlier this month, Suu Kyi was jailed for four years for inciting the military and violating COVID-19 restrictions, in a decision that was widely condemned by the international community.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing later reduced her term to two years and said she would serve her sentence under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw.
Convicted on walkie-talkie charges, Suu Kyi faced three years in prison, stemming from the early hours of the coup when soldiers and police raided her home and allegedly found her with banned equipment. was found in possession.
Suu Kyi is also accused of several counts of corruption – each of which carries a 15-year prison sentence – and violation of the Official Secrets Act.
Journalists have been barred from attending special court hearings in Naypyidaw and their lawyers have recently been banned from speaking to the media.
