Mumbai: Woman kills her mother-in-law over money dispute for treatment

A 37-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing her 61-year-old mother-in-law after they later fought over money needed for treatment.

The incident took place on the morning of December 13 at 10.30 am at his house near Ambedkar School at Dharavi crossroads.

The accused has been identified as 37-year-old Shanti Murugan, who used to do odd jobs in the neighbourhood. Murgan lives with her husband, who works as a cook, their two daughters aged 15 and 18, and her mother-in-law Antony Muthuswamy, 61.

“For the past several days, Shanti was fighting with her husband over the treatment of her mother-in-law, which cost her Rs 3 lakh. While the mother-son duo wanted to spend the money, Shanti was fighting with them against spending the money so that it could be saved for the future of their two daughters,” said a police officer from the Dharavi police station.

On the fateful day, when both the daughters and the husband were not at home, Shanti and her mother-in-law had a heated argument, which turned into a physical fight. “Shanti strangled her with a rope,” the police officer said.

When the police arrived, Shanti told that her mother-in-law fell in the bathroom. However, the post-mortem report from Sion Hospital gave the cause of death as strangulation. The police then interrogated him calmly and later arrested him.
