Mumbai: Depressed by her care, mentally ill teenage daughter killed woman, says police

A 41-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing a 19-year-old mentally ill daughter at her residence in Andheri and making it a case of suicide. The woman told the police that she was extremely disappointed with her daughter, who was mentally ill since birth and needed someone to look after her at all times.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at around 2.30 pm in their one-room kitchen on the second floor of a building in Parsiwada on Sahar Road. 41-year-old woman Shraddha Suresh lived there with her husband and three children. The victim Vaishnavi was his eldest daughter. They also have two other daughters, aged 16 and two.

The police control room received information from a neighbor that a person living in the building had died by suicide. A team from Andheri police station reached the spot and found Vaishnavi lying unconscious and her parents sitting next to her. He was taken to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Vaishnavi’s mother Shraddha told the police that her daughter was mentally ill and committed suicide. The police suspected something wrong in the statement given by Shraddha and questioned the doctor who conducted the post-mortem. The doctor said that it is unlikely that a mentally ill person can take such a step. After this the Andheri police interrogated Shraddha for a long time. During interrogation, she broke down and confessed that she had strangled her daughter with a belt when she was alone at home, police said. Her husband was at work when the incident happened and her 16-year-old daughter was in college.

When asked about the motive behind the murder, a police officer said, “Her mother told us that she is extremely disappointed with her daughter, who is mentally ill since birth. The daughter was able to walk but she always needed someone to take care of her. They couldn’t leave him alone at home.”

“The mother said that the whole family used to be depressed because of her problems. Her mother used to make some money selling breakfast items, but she went out of business during the pandemic-induced lockdown. Her husband, who worked in a private company, lost his job during the lockdown,” said the official.
