Monterey Park gunman identified after killing himself in white van

Police say they have discovered “multiple pieces of evidence” inside the white van where California shooting suspect Hu Can Tran was found dead.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, evidence that links the suspect to Monterey Park as well as the nearby Alhambra includes a handgun that may be illegal in California.

He described it as a “magazine-fed, semiautomatic assault pistol” with an extended, large-capacity magazine.

A man found dead after a police standoff in Torrance was the Monterey Park shooting suspect, the Los Angeles County Sheriff has confirmed.

Robert Luna told reporters that officers found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff.

Police in Torrance, California, which is located outside Los Angeles, identified a white van and surrounded it with police vehicles, including SWAT vans and armored BearCat vehicles, on Sunday afternoon.

Luna identified the suspect as Hu Can Tran (72).

Police have also recovered some evidence, including an assault gun, from the van that links the suspect to both the Alhambra and Monterey Park scenes, according to Mr. Luna, who said there are “no outstanding suspects” linked to the massacre.

A prominent member of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce told ABC The firing may have been done due to a domestic dispute.

Law enforcement has not confirmed that information, saying only that the suspect is believed to be an Asian male between the ages of 30 and 50.

Chester Chong said that the owner of the dance ballroom studio was hosting a party when the shooting occurred. They alleged that the gunman was the husband of a woman who attended the meeting.

The shooting occurred as the predominantly Asian American community of Monterey Park prepared to officially begin Lunar New Year celebrations.

City of Monterey Park canceled the next day Ten people were killed and ten others injured during Lunar New Year celebrations after a gunman fired indiscriminately inside a dance room studio in the city.

“The City of Monterey Park is saddened to announce that there was a shooting incident late Saturday night January 21st at 122 West Garvey in the City of Monterey Park. The City extends its condolences to the individuals, families and friends of those injured. in the tragic incident,” the city said in a statement.

“Even though the incident did not occur at the 2023 Lunar New Year celebration, an active investigation is currently underway and the area near and around the festival has been affected.

“As a precaution and for the safety of everyone involved, the city regrets to announce the cancellation of the second day of the festival, which was scheduled for today, Sunday, January 22.

During a press conference earlier on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna encouraged residents to assist with other Lunar New Year celebrations, and said he would be attending one himself later that day.

Mr Luna said law enforcement would update the community if it believed there was a threat.

In response to the mass shooting this morning, officials in Monterey Park have set up a Victim Resource Center at the Langley Senior Center located at 400 West Emerson Avenue.

“I want to make sure that victims, families and friends have access to that resource,” Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said during a press conference on Sunday.

“There are so many parts to this. The response, the medical side of it but as we look for the suspect, we will not forget the victims and the survivors.

“… it is our responsibility to hold them in our arms.”

10 people died and 10 others were injured in the violence on Saturday night.

President Joe Biden sent his prayers to the victims of the California mass shooting and urged locals to follow the guidance of law enforcement as the search for the suspect continued Sunday morning.

The president wrote on Twitter that he was “monitoring” the situation as the search for the suspect continued.

At least 10 people are feared dead and several others wounded in a shooting at a ballroom and dance studio that was hosting Chinese New Year celebrations.

Dance instructor David Duvall, who teaches at the ballroom dance studio where the shooting took place but was not there at the time, has said that many of his students were older adults.

“Certainly there are going to be people in their 70s, 80s, people in their 90s,” Mr. Duvall told Los Angeles Times,

“I teach a lot of people who are older people. I have a feeling it could be one of them or someone I know.

On Saturday night, about seven miles east of downtown Los Angeles, visitors gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

According to the paper, the two-day festival attracts thousands of people, making it the largest of its kind in the region.

Around 10.22 pm, a person entered the dance club and started firing. Police do not know whether he was targeting people, firing indiscriminately or both.

In a news conference on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said he would not name the hospitals where the victims were taken out of extreme caution.

Mr. Lunas said that earlier on Sunday, it was noted that a specialty hospital was treating some victims who were injured when a gunman opened fire inside a dance ballroom studio in Monterey Park.

“Someone called one of those hospitals to say something like ‘go and finish the job,'” Mr. Luna said.

“This is absolutely terrible. Please these victims and survivors are going through so much, let us not traumatize them any more.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office has released a photo of the suspect in the Monterey Park shooting.

The gunman is believed to be an Asian male, aged between 30 and 50 years.

Law enforcement said the man was likely wearing a leather jacket, hat and glasses.

His name has not been released.
