Mohali wants new solution to old sewerage problem

Sewerage or lack thereof is a major problem for Mohali. But none of the three main parties – AAP, SAD and Congress – have so far raised the issue properly as they are honking horns in Mohali to woo voters for the February 20 Punjab Assembly elections.

Old sewer lines have started developing cracks at many places and the rainy season has worsened the situation in Kharar, Zirakpur, Mohali and Kurali.

Laying new sewer lines was a major election promise by political parties in the last elections, but none of them actually followed through after the elections were over.

Advocate Jasbir Singh, resident of Zirakpur told Indian Express That the situation was so bad that at present 30 minutes of rain blocked the city. He said that the sewerage of the city is very old and people should ask the candidates about their roadmap to solve this problem.

“There was an outbreak of diarrhea in Zirakpur, and some deaths were also reported. It is an established fact that drinking water was mixed with sewer lines due to the outbreak. No one was held responsible. People should ask the candidates for accountability,” he said.

Retired Chandigarh police officer Arun Verma, who lives in Kharar, said the city often turns into a foul-smelling mess during incessant rains.

“There is a huge difference between living in Chandigarh and Kharar. The rain here has made life difficult for the people. Sewerage lines are old and blocked. Political parties make tall claims, but everything falls apart once the elections are over.

The sewerage problem has also taken a formidable form in the city of Mohali. the former BJP Councilor Ashok Jha said that he had passed a resolution in the House three years ago but the new pipeline has not been laid till date.

Jha said, “Our party will take up this issue again.

Ranjit Kaka, a social worker from Kurali, said he had also raised the issue and said that the old sewerage system in the city was the culprit. “If the sewer line starts overflowing, it becomes difficult for the residents.
