Mets aces are getting closer to return from injury

Mets Aces Jacob deGrom and Max Schazer took their next step toward returning to New York’s rotation on Wednesday.

DeGrom, sidelined since last 7 JulyThrown 27 pitches to hitters in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and a minor league injury could progress to rehabilitation work.

“We’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” said Mets manager Buck Showalter after watching the video from Citi Field. “Tomorrow, if he feels well, we’ll probably be able to talk about that next step.”

The 34-year-old, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, missed the second half of last season due to a right-handed tightness in his right-hand side. He returned and began spring training on March 22 and 27, then was sidelined by a stress reaction in his right scapula that led to swelling. He did not bowl another bullpen session until 4 June.

“He didn’t have anything that took him off the schedule until now,” Showalter said. “You can tell he’s excited about where he is. Body language, more than anything.”

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, has been sidelined after straining his left oblique muscle while pitching against St. Louis on May 18. He was to begin his second rehab on Wednesday night for Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Taking the mound against the Hartford Yard Goats.

“I was going to send him ‘good luck with the yard goats,’ but I don’t think he’ll take it well,” Showalter said. “I guess I’ll do it anyway.”

Shazer threw 65 pitches for Binghamton against Reading last Tuesday, allowing two runs and three hits in 3 1/3 innings with six strikes and one walk.
