Meteorologists issued orange alert for 4 districts of Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 7 August

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for four districts of Kerala – Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki – where heavy rains will occur today and on August 11.

Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (11-20 cm in 24 hours) and heavy (7-11 cm) is very likely at one or two places over the state on August 7 and 11. cm in 24 hours) rain is very likely at one or two places on August 8 and August 10.”

The South-West Monsoon has been very active over the state, with heavy rainfall at most places.

In the last 24 hours, Vaikom in Kottayam district received over 12 cm of rain. Alappuzha and Mavelikkara received 11-11 cm of rain. Cherthala grew by more than 10 cm and some parts of Ernakulam by more than eight cm.

Wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely over southeast Arabian Sea.

The IMD said fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kasaragod districts on August 8.

Red alert indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours. Orange alert means 6 cm to 20 cm very heavy rain. Yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 cm to 11 cm. – PTI
