Medals to be awarded this summer North American Indigenous Games perform in nova scotia ok art, including a traditional eight-pointed star.

Organizers revealed the design today and said indigenous athletes from across the continent would win around 3,000 gold, silver and bronze medals from sporting events set for July.

The ribbon from which the medals hang will bear the logo of the Games and the Mi’kmaq word, “Zipuktuk”, meaning “Great Harbour”.

The medallions were designed by student Ella Schothern, from the community of Hardwoodlands, and finalized by Mi’kmaq artist Teela Fern Paul.

Games chairman George (Tex) Marshall says the design reflects the spirit of the Games and the host Mi’kmaq people.

Schotthorn, who created the initial medal design in Grade 6 and is now in Grade 9, says she is proud to see her illustrations on the medals, especially the eight-pointed star representing the area where The contestants will gather.

“I was inspired by the Mi’kmaq star and its significance within indigenous culture,” she said in a press release.
