Mayor says Burlington’s 150th anniversary is ‘laying the foundation for the next generation’ Globalnews.ca

The mayor of Burlington, Ontario, says an upcoming landmark for the city is a starting point to build the city for the next 150 years.

Marian Mead Ward says the city’s anniversary in 2023 will look to past Indigenous learnings to provide a possible roadmap for the future development of its community centres, amenities and parks to serve the next seven generations in the municipality.

“They are in high demand and we need to do more for our growing communities,” Mead Ward told 900 CHML. Good morning Hamilton.

“It’s a huge challenge, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to lay the foundation for the next generation and build something for those who will never know our names.”

The villages of Wellington Square and Port Nelson merged to become the Village of Burlington in 1873, before the City of Burlington became the City of Burlington in 1914.

Until the late 19th century, agriculture was the most prosperous part of the region’s economy, before gradually modernizing in the late 20th century, when food processing, electronics, transportation, pharmaceuticals and the environment became its major industries.

The 150 logo commemorating the anniversary goes beyond the merger and pays tribute to the indigenous history of the land by recognizing the Treaty Lands of the Credit First Nation’s Mississauga.

Mead Ward explained, “Orange is meant to mark truth and reconciliation … Light blue symbolizes freedom as we continue to live in peace and harmony.”

“Yellow symbolizes unity and our multicultural community, which is growing every year, and green represents nature and the land.”

Mead Ward acknowledges financial challenges due to ongoing effects COVID-19 and recently inflation There will be some impact on its growth amid anticipated lower municipal revenue and increased costs.

“It’s been a tough budget year, but it’s really the same experience when I talk to mayors across Ontario, the budget is consistent with what they’re facing, the same pressures, seeing five to seven per cent tax increases board in Ontario,” Mead Ward said.
