Maxwell brought dazzling sparkle and smile to NY Fashion Week

At the end of Brandon Maxwell’s show at New York Fashion Week, his models were doing something that models don’t usually do on the runway. They were smiling.

Maybe it’s because Maxwell dressed them in clothes that were meant to reflect joy and fun – dresses with shimmering psychedelic patterns and bright colors in casual clothing that evoked a day at the park or at the beach.

“Don’t we all want to be on the beach this time?” Maxwell said during an interview backstage after Friday night’s show. “Life hasn’t been a beach for the past year and a half.”

In the past, he said that his designs have been a more literal reflection of his moods and experiences. “If it’s a dark time it’s black clothes and tights,” he said.

But this time, Maxwell said instead of focusing on the sadness of the past year, he “wanted to find the beauty in the moment”.

So, he’s designed his Spring Summer 2022 collection for a casual-chic aesthetic with bold prints in pinks, oranges and greens, plaid board shorts, glitter windbreakers, jackets and trench coats, dresses in bright metallics, and tees with a mushroom design. accepted along. There were also long dresses, but made casual by wide stripes or bold psychedelic prints.

Beachwear also made an appearance, with models in bikini tops tucking rolled-up towels or blankets built into cross-body bags. Some touted matching oversized backpacks. Supermodel Gigi Hadid closed the show in a silver, patterned pantsuit with a bikini top.

Maxwell is known for her opulent gowns and formal wear, which are adored by many, including Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle And especially Lady Gaga. But he said his actual personal style is more sober.

“I’m a very casual person,” he said. “I have a pair of shorts under these nice pants that I’m wearing for you.”

Although Maxwell was excited to return to the show in-person, he said the experience was bitter.

“It was my first show without my family and most of my friends, so it felt tough,” he said. “Doing a show has always been a family experience for me.”

“But I also have a different family, that’s here,” he said. “And that’s the family I work with and collect.”

Maxwell praised the unsung activists who helped make the show a reality. “People forget that it’s a business, and I think they see a designer at the end of the runway and the model, and don’t think about all the people who come to work every day to make those clothes. are,” he said.

Despite a rough year, Maxwell said he felt genuine joy when he watched the show.

“I was pure delight when the first lady hit the runway, because I have no idea how long the show was,” he said. “It felt like 30 seconds…nine minutes maybe. Yeah, felt great for nine minutes.”

“It’s good to see everyone realize tonight that there is a ray of hope again,” he said.
