Nine people were killed in a mass shooting late Saturday night in Monterey Park, California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

The statement said that the incident occurred at around 10:22 pm (1:22 am) local time. It did not say whether other people were injured.

Sgt. Bob Bose of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told The Associated Press that the shooter is a male.

It was not clear whether the suspect was in custody.

The shooting happened after thousands gathered for Lunar New Year celebrations in a small town about 10 miles east of Los Angeles, home to about 60,000 people with a large Asian population.

According to the city’s website, the two-day event includes “food booths with a variety of delectable items, amusement rides and lots of live entertainment.”

Police and fire units could be seen in the area in videos posted on social media. Others showed victims being transferred to ambulances.
