Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday expressed grief over the killing of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and said during his tenure the two worked to elevate ties between the two countries to the level of a global and strategic partnership. “I am deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the tragic assassination of the former Prime Minister, His Excellency Shinzo Abe. He was a good friend of mine. During my tenure as Prime Minister, we have worked to elevate the relationship between our two countries to a working level. A global and strategic partnership. Our efforts have taken India-Japan relations to a qualitatively new level,” Singh said in his letter to the Japanese ambassador. He also asked them to express their deepest condolences to the members of Abe’s family and the people of Japan on this sad occasion.

Abe, 67, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was shot from behind during a campaign speech in Nara, western Japan. He was taken to the hospital but he was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later declared brought dead in the hospital.
