Filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which may hit the theaters in September, has landed in official trouble. A lawyer has sued director and actor Vikram over his character look of Aditya Karikalan in the film. In the notice, a lawyer named Selvan has accused the actor and director of distorting historical information related to the Cholas.

Reportedly, the lawyer has claimed that the Chola king never wore a tilak on his forehead as seen in the character poster of the film, which depicts Vikram in the character of Aditya Karikalan. The poster was launched last week.

Further, the complainant also identified that ‘Tilak’ was visible in the poster, but not in the teaser, which was also unveiled last week. Meanwhile, he has demanded a special screening of the film ahead of its launch to ensure that the makers do not misrepresent history.

So far neither the director nor the actor has reacted to the notice.

The upcoming period drama by Kalki is based on the traditional Tamil novel of the same name by Ponniyin Selvan. The film will open in theaters in two parts and the first part is set to hit the theaters on September 30 this year in five languages ​​- Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

Ponniyin Selvan is considered one of the most expensive works ever done in Indian cinema. The movie includes many big stars like Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, among others. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Nassar, Parthiban, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Jayaram amongst others.

Ravi Varman is the face behind the cinematography of the upcoming film. Sreekar Prasad is the editor and AR Rahman is the music director. Nationwide’s award-winning artwork director Thotta Tharani is handling the manufacturing design.
