Man jumps from third floor window as fire breaks out at multi-family home in New York

WHITE PLAINS, Westchester County (WABC) – A fast-moving fire destroyed a multi-family home Tuesday morning in White Plains, leaving at least one person trying to escape the flames from a third-floor window jumped.

The fire started as a three-story house on Hale Avenue just before 8 a.m., and fire officials say windy conditions helped the flames spread quickly.

White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong said police arrived at the scene in less than 30 seconds and firefighters arrived in less than a minute.

When they arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames.

Most residents were able to evacuate on their own, but the third-floor tenant’s brother told Eyewitness News that his brother had to jump out of a window and is now hospitalised.

There were no casualties, but seven people were injured.

Chong said two people were burned, four were exposed to smoke, and the man who jumped from the third floor broke his ankle.

There were no casualties in responding to firefighters or police.

The house was completely destroyed.

The Red Cross is present on the spot to help the displaced.
