Man accused of child sex abuse in southern Alberta retains lawyer ahead of court appearance globalnews.ca

A man in southern Alberta accused of physically and sexually abusing his infant daughter has retained a lawyer.

The 52-year-old suspect has been charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault, sexual interference and failing to provide the essentials of life.

The man’s 31-year-old wife, who is the mother of the child, is accused of failing to provide for the necessaries of life.

The man is scheduled to return to court in Lethbridge, Alta., on February 24 for a bail hearing, while his wife is scheduled to appear on February 10.

Lethbridge police say they were called to a home last month to find that the infant was being abused and was found to be in medical distress.

Her injuries were found to be extensive and police have said that an investigation revealed that the baby girl was attacked several times in her first six weeks of life.

Lethbridge police told Global News on Friday that the infant remains in serious condition.
