Maharashtra: Man hatches robbery story after losing Rs 10 lakh in bitcoin business

Palghar, 23 November

Police said on Tuesday that a businessman in Maharashtra’s Palghar district made up a fake story of being robbed after allegedly losing Rs 10 lakh in bitcoin trading.

An official of the Vasai police station said Sumant Ligayat, who supplies groceries and other essentials, had saved Rs 10 lakh for his daughter’s wedding to be held next month.

However, he lost all the money in the bitcoin business and was worried about facing his family, he said.

The man reached the Vasai police station and claimed that he was robbed by an unidentified person, who snatched his bag on Monday afternoon and fled on a two-wheeler, they said.

A case of robbery was registered and during investigation the police realized there was no truth in the complaint, the officer said, adding that the police had issued a warning to the businessman. -PTI
