Maharashtra has potential to become a model-state for the world: CSIR chief

Shekhar Mande, Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has urged young scientists to use science as an effective medium to find solutions for society and its well-being.

Mande was delivering a speech on ‘Contribution of Maharashtra to Science’, a virtual talk organized as part of ‘Maharashtra Diamond Jubilee Lecture Series’ organized by Maharashtra Information Center on Sunday.

There is no doubt that Maharashtra will lead and has the potential to become a role model for the world. I urge all young scientists to use science and direct their efforts for the betterment of society.

During his address, the CSIR chief shared the past and ongoing research at several scientific institutions including IIT-Bombay, National Institute of Virology, National Center for Cell Science, National Institute of Radio Astrophysics, Inter University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Bhabha Did. Nuclear Research Center and others.

“Our state-run universities have also demonstrated scientific work of a high order and contributed greatly to scientific progress,” he said.

He said that not only science and research, Maharashtra has promoted education, especially medical education.

He said that along with Pune, cities like Kolhapur, Nagpur, Mumbai and Aurangabad were home to educational institutions and universities that have made great contributions.

He highlighted the scientific and progressive history of Maharashtra, using as examples the mathematician Bhaskaracharya, Dr. Anandibai Joshi, one of India’s foremost medical practitioners, and social reformer Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak.
