You don’t need to have a long lead to win a hockey game.
Denver Barkey scored exactly 32 seconds into regulation time to give the London Knights a 5-4 win over the Kitchener Rangers at Budweiser Gardens on Wednesday night.
Easton Cowan knocked a clearing attempt out of the air and took the puck back to Barkey and he took a turn shot through some traffic and into the Ranger net.
The Knights found themselves down by two goals on three separate occasions in the game and twice managed to fight back to within one, but not until Will Nicol Kitchener scored under goalie Marco Costantini for his first Ontario Hockey League goal. He could not equalize until a puck was found. First OHL game.
This occurred four minutes and 10 seconds into the third period, and the score remained that way until the final minute when Barkey, Cowan and Logan Mailloux combined on the game-winner.
Isaiah George closed the gap to 4–3 on a spectacular individual effort with just 1:37 left in the second period.
Sean McGurn recorded his 10th point in three games for the Knights when Ryan Winterton made a catch on McGurn’s skate on a short-handed rush for the first.
Max McCue had London’s second goal off a fine fake pass and a backhand flick that hit the back of the Rangers net with 55 seconds to go in the first round.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Phillip Messer scored twice for Kitchener.
Zack Bowen made 31 saves for his 11th consecutive win in net.
Costantini intercepted 33 pucks at Kitchener’s end of the ice.
London goalkeeper Brett Brochu was undressed for the game. He is listed as day-to-day due to a lower body injury sustained in the second period of a game against the Flint Firebirds on February 6.
The Windsor Spitfires beat the Firebirds 9-3 on Wednesday night in Flint, Michigan. Londoner Brett Harrison had two goals and three assists for Windsor.
With a game in hand, it is one point behind the London Spitfire for first place in the Western Conference.
