Local singer finds her way back to music after battling addiction

JAMESTOWN, NY (WKBW) – “10 years ago, I was destined for a grave. Now, I’m here inspiring others and motivating my daughter. In general, I just lived the same life I’ve always dreamed of,” Mindy Davy said.

The road to becoming a famous singer was not always easy for Mindy Davey. She knew from a young age that she could always achieve something like this.

Music used to run in the family, and it certainly played a part.

“You always hear people say that singing is not a real job. Well my parents always encouraged me to go for it and go for my dreams,” Davy said.

His mother, Linda, said it didn’t take long for a true talent to be recognized.

“I had an old acoustic guitar. He picked it up one day and just started chowing down on it, and I said ‘Oh, he got it,'” Davey said.

Mindy was not even 10 years old when she first started playing guitar and singing. But as she began to develop as an artist, her mother saw a musical ability that stood above the rest.

“He has an amazing writing talent,” Dewey said.

Mindy’s producer, Derek Wheeler at Lost Recording Studio in Jamestown, has worked with her for more than two years. He is always eager to see her in the studio because he notices the same thing.

“When she comes in, she knows what she’s going to sing. His songs have always had a direct meaning to him,” Wheeler said.

Ability to write so personally so well; It all stems from an opium addiction that Mindy struggled with for four years.

“It took away all the pain I was going through at the time,” Davey said.

During that time, Mindy would be arrested for possession, and put into rehab for her addiction.

It was the hardest moment in her life, but her mother always knew she would make it the other way, and get back to music.

“I just prayed, and prayed, and prayed. I knew she was going to have it again,” Davy said.

Everything began to change during Mindy’s rehab, when she found out she was pregnant with their daughter, Ariana.

“I knew this fight was no longer just me. I knew anything I put inside my body was going to hurt my baby,” Davy said.

This again gave Mindy a purpose and said it saved her life. She began writing music again, picking up the guitar and going to live-streaming websites to play her new music for her fans.

On his upcoming album, Destiny, he has a song dedicated entirely to his daughter. Ariana has special needs, but Mindy knows it doesn’t matter.

“Sometimes there is a stigma with children with special needs that they cannot do anything. Well, they’re really, really smart and talented, and these kids deserve to know,” Davy said.

The end of the song shows his daughter bursting with laughter and love that would make almost anyone emotional. It’s a true mother-daughter relationship, and Mindy has the privilege of meeting her every day.

“She saved my life. She gives me meaning, and it’s a wonderful feeling,” Davy said.
