Live Updates: Over 1,000 killed in Turkey-Syria earthquake

At least 912 people have died in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a televised address on Monday.

In Syria, at least 386 people have been killed, with 239 mostly killed in the areas of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Tartus, Syrian state TV reported earlier. The “White Helmets” group, officially known as the Syria Civil Defense, reported at least 147 deaths in opposition-controlled areas of northwestern Syria.

Syrian state TV reported that hundreds of people were also injured after the quake, with 648 injured in Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Tartus. The White Helmets said another 340 people were also reported injured in opposition-controlled areas.

Erdogan said rescue teams in Turkey rescued more than 2,400 people from under the rubble of buildings damaged by the quake.

The Turkish leader said that in Turkey, around 9,000 personnel are currently working in the search and rescue efforts and more are joining. It is not yet known how many more people are under the debris.

Erdogan said the Turkish government’s coordination center is in the capital Ankara and is being run by Vice President Fuat Oktay.
